The Benromach Distillery has been crafting true Speyside single malts in their own unique way since 1898. Pre-1960s, Speyside distilleries topped off their fires with local peat when coal stock was low, yielding a balanced single malt with a twinge of smoke; commercial maltings basically killed this tradition. When Gordon & Macphail bought the distillery in 1993, they resurrected the style and continue to employ Chapeltown Springs water from the Romach Hills, merely two miles from the distillery, and three master distillers. First fill 3yr sherry casks from William and Humbert in Spain and new oak casks from Antonio Paez Lobato are used for all maturation. Along with the Urquharts of Elgin family's remarkable private collection of beautifully aged single malts, the Benromach line remains vast and still handcrafted.
