A Different Wood, a Darker Beer
Schlenkerla is known for beechwood smoke, but Erle is the exception. It is malted over alderwood, which burns cooler and sweeter and leaves a lighter, more resinous smoke character than beech. That smoke sits on top of a schwarzbier, the black lager of eastern Germany.
The combination gives you roast and smoke at the same time without the beer turning heavy. It is dark in the glass but still a lager underneath, which means it finishes cleaner than the color suggests.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Gentle alderwood smoke, dark chocolate, and roasted grain
- Palate: Medium bodied, roasty and softly smoky, with a cocoa edge
- Finish: Dry and clean, smoke lingering longer than the roast
How to Enjoy
- Serve at 45 to 50 degrees so both the smoke and the roast stay readable

The Story
Brewing at the Heller-Brau site in Bamberg is documented back to 1405, and the Trum family has run it for six generations. Bamberg is the world capital of smoked beer, and Schlenkerla still operates its own malthouse to smoke its grain in house. Brewed to the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
