Bomberger's Declaration 2023: 108 Proof, Chinquapin Oak, Gone

Bomberger's Declaration is one half of Michter's Legacy Series, the distillery's pair of annual limited releases alongside Shenk's Homestead. It is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon bottled at 108 proof (54% ABV), and it is the bigger, bolder of the two.

The name traces the same lineage. John Shenk founded the distillery in 1753. It became Bomberger's Distillery in the 1800s, and then Michter's in the mid 20th century. Shenk's honors the founding, Bomberger's honors the era that made the whiskey famous.

Why the 2023 Is Its Own Bottle

Every Bomberger's release is built differently, and the wood is the story. The 2023 was matured in Chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii), naturally air dried and seasoned for three years before being toasted and charred to the exact specification of Michter's Master of Maturation, Andrea Wilson. Malted rye was used in the production.

Chinquapin is a slow growing white oak cousin with tighter grain than standard American oak. Air drying it for three years instead of kiln drying it strips the harsh tannins and leaves the sugars, which is where the molasses and dark fruit in this bottle come from.

It was released once, in a batch of roughly 2,500 bottles, and cannot be reordered. What is on the shelf is what exists.

• Nose: Dark fruit with nuts and burnt caramel over rich mahogany depth.
• Palate: Deep molasses moving into dried fruit, chocolate and warm baking spice.
• Finish: Lingering and complex, the proof carrying it long.

• A few drops of water: opens the dark fruit without thinning the body.
• Side by side with Shenk's: the two halves of the 2023 Legacy Series. Shenk's is the softer sour mash at 91.2 proof, Bomberger's is the straight bourbon at 108. Same distillery, same year, two very different whiskies.
