Carlo Rossi Sangria: The Pitcher Wine That Does Not Pretend
Carlo Rossi Sangria is grape wine with natural citrus flavors, vinted and bottled by Carlo Rossi Vineyards in Modesto, California, part of the E&J Gallo family. 10% alcohol by volume, gluten free, and it comes in the 4 liter jug that has been at the center of backyard parties for fifty years.
We are not going to talk to you about terroir. This is sangria base, and it is very good at that one job. Pour it over ice with sliced orange, lemon and lime, let it sit twenty minutes, and you have a pitcher that costs a fraction of anything you would build from a 750. At 10% ABV it is sessionable in the heat, which is the entire point of sangria and something most bottled versions get wrong by coming in too strong and too sweet.
4 liters equals 5.3 standard bottles, or roughly 27 five ounce pours. For a party of ten, one jug is the afternoon.
How to Use It
- Classic sangria: jug, sliced orange and lemon, a splash of brandy, ice. Twenty minutes in the fridge before serving.
- Summer spritz: half sangria, half soda water over ice with a lime wedge. Lower alcohol, all day.
- Frozen: blend with frozen peaches or strawberries. Works better than it has any right to.
- Serve chilled: this one genuinely is better cold, and refrigerate after opening.
