Eagle Rare 12 Year: The Bottle Buffalo Trace Could Not Keep On Shelves
Eagle Rare 12 Year was introduced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery in June 2025 as a permanent addition to the Eagle Rare range, aged a minimum of twelve years on Mashbill #1, from barrels hand selected by the distillery team, and bottled at 95 proof (47.5% ABV). That is a step up in strength from the 10 Year, and the extra two years show.
Worth being straight with you about the price. Buffalo Trace set a $49.99 suggested retail on this bottle. Almost nobody has sold it at that number. Demand outpaced supply from the week it launched, it went heavily allocated nationwide, and the real retail market has settled between roughly $200 and $330 with the secondary market running higher still. We would rather explain that than pretend the sticker price never existed. Our price is at the bottom of that real range.
Buffalo Trace makes the case on the back label: few bourbons offer such a glimpse of great whiskey making, and even fewer can claim they have spent such a length of time in the barrel.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Sweet and oaky with subtle vanilla, dark cherry and a touch of aged leather.
- Palate: Full and complex. Rich caramel and toffee over dried orange peel, baking spice and layered oak, with the extra five proof points giving it more grip than the 10 Year.
- Finish: Long and rich. Buffalo Trace calls it reminiscent of a fine port wine, and on the 12 that reads as accurate rather than poetic.
How to Enjoy
- Neat: pour into a Glencairn and give it two minutes. The nose opens noticeably.
- One large cube: the distillery explicitly recommends neat or over ice. At 95 proof a little dilution pulls the caramel forward.
- Do not mix this one: the 10 Year is the cocktail bottle. This is a sipper.
- Beside the 10 Year: two years and five proof points apart, same mashbill, same distillery. One of the more instructive vertical pours available in bourbon right now.
