DESCRIPTION

Six years in Felipe Camarena's ancient George Dickel barrels, then one more in French oak. 2,000 bottles for the entire United States. This one is number 1594, in its engraved wooden box.

G4 Extra Anejo 7 Anos: Felipe Camarena's Personal Reserve

G4 comes from Destilería El Pandillo (NOM 1579) in Jesús María, Jalisco, run by Ing. Felipe J. Camarena, whose family has been distilling tequila since 1937 across four generations. Camarena is one of the few producers in the category whose name alone moves bottles, and this is the release that carries his own name on it: Reserva Especial de Felipe Camarena. Bottled at 42% ABV (84 proof) and signed on the label.

The barrels are the story. This extra anejo spent six years in Camarena's ancient George Dickel Tennessee whiskey barrels, then a seventh year finishing in single-use French oak wine barrels. Seven years is far beyond the three-year minimum for extra anejo, and almost nobody in tequila commits agave spirit to that long in ex-Dickel wood. The wine cask year at the end is what keeps it from going flat and oaky.

How limited this actually is. 2,000 hand numbered bottles were made for the United States and 650 for the rest of the world. That is 2,650 bottles on earth. Each arrives in a handmade wooden box, engraved with the edition, with a brass plate inside. Ours is Edition 1594 of 2000, dated 2024.

In the family's own words, printed on the back of the bottle: we are fourth generation tequila producers, we personally supervise each step, starting with the selection of our own agave, and taking thorough care in the process to ensure the maximum quality. El Pandillo is also known for the sustainability of its production, which is not marketing at this distillery so much as how Camarena built the place.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Cooked agave still present under seven years of wood, with chocolate, toasted almond and old oak.
  • Palate: Deep and luxurious. Dark chocolate and almond over caramel, with the Tennessee whiskey barrels reading as vanilla and the French oak year adding a dry wine edge.
  • Finish: Long and velvety, closing on caramel, fine oak and a faint return of the agave.

How to Enjoy

  • Neat, room temperature, slowly: seven years of wood needs air and time. Give it fifteen minutes.
  • In a copita or a Glencairn: and nothing else in the glass.
  • Never mixed: at this scarcity and this age, a cocktail is vandalism.
  • Collectors: hand numbered, boxed, and 2,650 bottles worldwide. This is a bottle that is worth more sealed to some people than opened.
