This is the 2025 George T. Stagg, and it came out of the barrel at 142.8 proof. Fifteen years old, distilled in a single spring season of 2010, bottled in the autumn of 2025. Uncut, unfiltered, and the proof is handwritten on the label because Buffalo Trace does not know what it will be until they dump the barrels.
142.8 proof is not a gimmick, it is the point
Stagg is the biggest bourbon in the Antique Collection and one of the highest proof bourbons anybody bottles with a fifteen year age statement behind it. Most whiskey that strong is young, because young whiskey holds proof and old whiskey loses it to the angels. Fifteen years in a Kentucky rickhouse and still 71.4% alcohol means these barrels sat somewhere hot and gave up water instead of spirit.
It drinks like it. Dark fruit, tobacco, leather, brown sugar and a wall of oak, and it does not taste like 142 proof until a second after you swallow. Water opens it up considerably and there is no shame in using some.
About the man on the label
George T. Stagg partnered with E.H. Taylor Jr. between 1865 and 1890 and built what was then the largest distillery in the world on the banks of the Kentucky River. A bourbon expert in 1890 called it the best of the best. That distillery is Buffalo Trace now, and it is one of only four in the country that stayed open through Prohibition.
