Germain-Robin XO is the flagship of one of America's most respected craft brandy houses. Founded in 1982 near Ukiah in Mendocino County by Hubert Germain-Robin, a descendant of a Cognac-making family, and Ansley Coale, the distillery set out to make world-class brandy in California using traditional alembic pot stills. The XO is distilled from wines of unusual quality and aged in the house's finest barrels, and it is bottled at 80 proof.
This is a seasonal, limited offering here at The Booze Outlet, available while supplies last. It is an outstanding gift for a Cognac drinker who has not yet discovered what California can do, or a special bottle to open after a holiday dinner.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich and layered, with dried fruit, ripe stone fruit, vanilla, and a gentle oak spice
- Palate: Smooth and elegant, with dried apricot, raisin, honeyed sweetness, and warm baking spice over seasoned oak
- Finish: Long and refined, with lingering oak, vanilla, and soft spice
How to Enjoy
- Neat: Pour 1.5 oz into a snifter or tulip glass and let it rest for a few minutes. Warm the glass in your hand to open up the aromas.
- With a Drop of Water: Add a few drops of cool water to 1.5 oz in a tulip glass to bring out more fruit and floral notes.
- Brandy Old Fashioned: 2 oz Germain-Robin XO, 0.25 oz demerara syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, stirred over a large cube with an orange peel.
- After Dinner Pairing: Serve 1.5 oz alongside dark chocolate, roasted nuts, or a cheese course with aged Gouda.

By distilling high-quality wines slowly in alembic pot stills, the traditional Cognac method, and aging the spirit in carefully selected barrels, the founders helped prove that California could produce brandy to rival the best of France.
