Gran Ricardo is the wine Monte Xanic is known for. Founded in 1987, the winery pioneered fine wine in the Valle de Guadalupe, and Gran Ricardo is its most ambitious expression, made from vineyards specially selected for this bottling in the Guadalupe Valley and Ojos Negros. Grapes go through careful cluster and berry selection, followed by cold maceration before fermentation and extended maceration after, building the depth and polish this wine is known for.

The 2023 vintage is a bold, structured red that rewards a little patience. Serve it with a great steak, open it for a milestone dinner, or lay it down. Either way, this is the bottle to reach for when you want to show someone just how good Mexican wine can be.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Black cherry, black currant, and blackberry, layered with violets, rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, and black and white pepper, finished with elegant oak, nutmeg, vanilla, and cocoa
  • Palate: Full-bodied and velvety, dry and rich with lively fruit and fresh acidity wrapped in ripe, polished, firm tannins
  • Finish: Long and satisfying, with black fruit, subtle caramel, and fine herbs and spices

How to Enjoy

  • Decant for 30 to 45 minutes: A structured, oak-aged red like this opens up beautifully with air, and the aromatics keep evolving in the glass.
  • Serve at 60-65°F: Slightly below room temperature lets the fruit shine without letting the alcohol take over.
  • Food pairings: Porterhouse, tomahawk, lamb chops, rack of lamb, pork belly, and slow-grilled beef or pork ribs. Also superb with blue and long-aged cheeses and Iberian ham.
  • Cellar it: Delicious in its youth, with the structure to age gracefully for up to 15 years.
