DESCRIPTION
The Rye That Put Utah on the Whiskey Map. Bold, Spicy, and Endlessly Versatile.
In 2006, David Perkins, a former biochemist, and his wife Jane founded High West Distillery in Park City, Utah, in a historic livery stable. They started with a 250-gallon still and a saloon, and they built something that nobody expected: a world-class whiskey operation in a state not known for spirits. By 2016, Whisky Advocate named High West their Distiller of the Year. Double Rye is the expression that earned that recognition.
A blend of two rye whiskeys, one young and spicy with gin-like botanical character, one older and more refined with honey and dried fruit, Double Rye achieves a balance that makes it exceptional both neat and in cocktails. It's the rye that bartenders reach for first and the bottle that converts whiskey drinkers who think they don't like rye.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Bold and aromatic, spicy rye grain leads into gin-like botanicals, anise, and a hint of honey that makes it immediately distinctive and unlike any other rye on the shelf
- Palate: Perfectly balanced, bold spice and botanical complexity from the young rye blend beautifully with the honey, dried fruit, and refined character of the older rye for a result that is greater than the sum of its parts
- Finish: Warm, spicy, and satisfying with lingering botanical notes and a gentle honey sweetness that fades cleanly and makes you want to pour another
How to Enjoy
- Neat or on the rocks: Pour 1.5 oz neat or over a large ice cube. The botanical complexity and spice character of Double Rye are genuinely rewarding to sip slowly and appreciate.
- Rye Manhattan: 2 oz High West Double Rye, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, stirred and served up with a cherry. The bold spice of Double Rye makes this one of the finest Manhattans you'll ever build.
- Old Fashioned: 2 oz Double Rye, 1 sugar cube, 2 dashes bitters, orange peel, over a large ice cube. The botanical character adds a complexity that bourbon Old Fashioneds can't match.
- Whiskey Sour: 2 oz Double Rye, 1 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup, shaken over ice. The spice and botanicals make this a genuinely outstanding sour.
What Makes It Special
High West Double Rye is a blend of two very different rye whiskeys: a 2-year-old rye with a high rye content that delivers bold spice and gin-like botanical character, and a 16-year-old rye that contributes honey, dried fruit, and refined complexity. The blending of these two extremes creates a whiskey that has the vibrancy and boldness of a young rye with the depth and refinement of an aged one. It's a genuinely clever approach to whiskey making, and the result is a rye that works in every context, from sipping neat to building the finest cocktails. Whisky Advocate's Distiller of the Year recognition in 2016 was not an accident. High West earned it, and Double Rye is the expression that made the case.
