The Beer of the Hofbrauhaus, in Cans
Hofbrau Munchen was founded in 1589 as the royal brewery of the Bavarian dukes, and its Oktoberfest beer fills the Hofbrau Festzelt, the largest and loudest tent on the Wiesn. This is that beer, in 500ML cans.
The half liter can is closer to a real Munich pour than a standard 12oz bottle, and it travels better. At 6.3 percent it is stronger than most festival lagers, but it is brewed pale and clean so it never drinks heavy. Cans also chill faster and keep light out entirely.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Light honey, fresh grain, and a gentle noble hop perfume
- Palate: Smooth golden malt with real body, restrained bitterness, no sharp edges

The Story
Duke Wilhelm V founded Hofbrau in 1589 because he thought the beer available in Munich was not good enough for his court. The brewery stayed royal property for centuries and is still owned by the state of Bavaria today. It is one of only six breweries legally permitted to pour at Oktoberfest, brewing under the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
