The Beer of the Hofbrauhaus
Hofbrau Munchen was founded in 1589 as the royal brewery of the Bavarian dukes, and its beer hall on the Platzl is the most visited in the world. Its Oktoberfest beer fills the Hofbrau Festzelt, the loudest and largest tent on the Wiesn, holding close to ten thousand people.
This is a stronger pour than most festival lagers at 6.3 percent, but it does not drink heavy. It is golden rather than amber, brewed pale and clean so that a full liter still goes down easily. That balance of strength and drinkability is exactly what a festival beer is supposed to do.

The Story
Duke Wilhelm V founded Hofbrau in 1589 because he thought the beer available in Munich was not good enough for his court. The brewery stayed royal property for centuries and is still owned by the state of Bavaria today. It is one of only six breweries legally permitted to pour at Oktoberfest, and it brews under the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
