DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
Local pickup only. Kegs are not shipped. 50 litres from the largest tent on the Wiesn, roughly 140 half liter pours.
The Largest Tent on the Wiesn, on Your Tap
Hofbrau Munchen was founded in 1589 as the royal brewery of the Bavarian dukes. Its Oktoberfest beer fills the Hofbrau Festzelt, the loudest and largest tent at the festival, seating close to ten thousand people.
At 6.3 percent this is stronger than most festival lagers, but it is brewed pale and clean so a full liter still goes down easily. On draft that balance is even more apparent. A 50 litre keg pours about 140 half liters.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Light honey, fresh grain, a gentle noble hop perfume
- Palate: Smooth golden malt with real body, restrained bitterness
- Finish: Warming and clean, longer than a standard helles
How to Enjoy
- Store cold and let the keg settle several hours after transport before tapping
- Pour at 45 to 48 degrees, around 12 psi on a European coupler
- Confirm coupler compatibility before pickup, German kegs differ from domestic
- Gift it: the Hofbrau name needs no explanation to an Oktoberfest crowd
The Story
Duke Wilhelm V founded Hofbrau in 1589 because Munich's beer was not good enough for his court. It stayed royal property for centuries and is still owned by the state of Bavaria. Hofbrau is one of only six breweries legally permitted to pour at Oktoberfest. Brewed to the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
