Italicus is the creation of Giuseppe Gallo, a bartender who set out to revive rosolio, a centuries old Italian liqueur category that once rivaled vermouth before fading from memory. Launched in 2016, it centers on bergamot from Calabria and cedro from Sicily, rounded out with chamomile, gentian, rose, lavender, and yellow melon. The distinctive ribbed bottle, topped with a fluted column and star, nods to classical Italian design and Roman heritage.
The result is bright, floral, and delicately bitter rather than sweet, an aperitivo built for the ritual hour before dinner. It has become a bartender favorite for the Italicus Spritz, a lighter and more aromatic alternative to the usual Aperol pour. At 20% ABV it stays sessionable and food friendly.
