DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
Kilkerran 12: The Quiet Classic from Campbeltown's Revived Distillery
Kilkerran 12 Year Old is the core expression from the Glengyle Distillery, a lightly peated Campbeltown malt that balances fruit, sweetness and a gentle maritime edge. It is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks for depth and roundness.
Bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added color, it delivers a waxy texture, citrus and toffee, and a soft wisp of smoke on the finish. It is complex enough for experienced drinkers yet friendly enough for newcomers to the region.
Glengyle was originally built in 1872 and closed in the 1920s. The Mitchell family, owners of nearby Springbank, revived it and began distilling again in 2004, restoring Campbeltown's distillery count to three.
Because the Glengyle name belongs to another brand, the whisky is sold as Kilkerran, after the original Gaelic name for Campbeltown. Its Springbank pedigree and modest price make it a favorite among whisky insiders and a smart, understated gift.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: lemon, green apple, vanilla, light smoke and a touch of sea salt
- Palate: waxy and rounded with toffee, citrus, malt, gentle spice and soft peat
- Finish: medium long with brine, sweet malt, dried fruit and a hint of smoke
How to Enjoy
- Neat: Serve at room temperature in a tulip glass to enjoy the waxy texture.
- With water: A splash of water brings forward the citrus and coastal notes.
- Cocktail: Highland Highball. Build 1.5 oz Kilkerran 12 over ice in a tall glass, top with 4 oz chilled soda water and garnish with a lemon peel.
- Gift it: An insider's Scotch with Springbank DNA, perfect for the curious whisky drinker.
