Leopold Bros Maryland Style Rye: A Forgotten American Style Revived
Before Prohibition, Maryland rye was a style all its own, softer and fruitier than the spicy ryes of Pennsylvania. Leopold Bros revives it with a mash of 65% rye, 15% corn and 20% floor malted barley.
The whiskey is aged five years in Colorado dunnage warehouses and bottled in bond at 100 proof. The result is fruity and floral at its core, with cinnamon, orange marmalade and a soft, buttery finish.
Maryland rye rose to fame during the Civil War, when soldiers stationed in Maryland to defend the capital developed a taste for it. The style all but disappeared after Prohibition until Todd and Scott Leopold set out to recreate it at their Denver distillery.
Malting their own barley on the distillery floor and aging in traditional dunnage warehouses, Leopold Bros has become a benchmark for historically minded American whiskey. This is a great value bottle for rye fans and cocktail lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
