The Luxardo family has been producing spirits from Marasca cherries since 1821, when Girolamo Luxardo founded the distillery in Zara after his wife Maria Canevari perfected a rosolio maraschino recipe that had been made in Dalmatian convents since medieval times. Today Luxardo operates in Torreglia in the Veneto, and the Sangue Morlacco — which translates to Blood of the Moor — is their deep, rich cherry liqueur made from Marasca cherries steeped in spirit.
Intensely cherry, dark, and complex, it is a natural in cocktails calling for cherry liqueur, equally excellent drizzled over ice cream or paired with dark chocolate.
