DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The bourbon that started with Basil Hayden. Bottled uncut at 114 proof.
Old Grand-Dad takes its name from Basil Hayden Sr., a frontier distiller who broke from convention in the late 1700s by leaning hard into rye. He passed that style down to his son, and then to his grandson, Raymond B. Hayden, who opened a distillery in Nelson County in 1840 and named the bourbon after his grandfather. First bottled under the Old Grand-Dad label in 1882, it was one of only a handful of brands legally produced as medicinal whiskey during Prohibition.
The mash bill is 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley, one of the highest rye percentages in the Jim Beam portfolio and the same profile later used to build Basil Hayden's and Booker's. The 114 expression is bottled straight from the barrel without chill filtration, so it keeps more of the oils and flavor compounds a filtered bourbon would lose. Expect it to run cloudy over ice. That is the whiskey working as intended.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Charred oak and black pepper spice, with rye grain and a touch of leather.
- Palate: Bold and peppery upfront, softening into vanilla, dark caramel, dried apricot, and ripe pear.
- Finish: Long and warming, with lingering tobacco leaf, cinnamon, and toasted oak.
How to Enjoy
- Neat, or with a single large ice cube to open up the fruit and vanilla notes without losing the spice.
- In a classic Old Fashioned, where the high rye content holds its own against sugar and bitters.
- As the backbone of a Manhattan, standing up to sweet vermouth better than a lower proof bourbon would.
- As a gift for the bourbon drinker who already owns the usual bottles. Pair it with a set of rocks glasses for an easy upgrade on a familiar favorite.
