March Beer, Built for October
Before refrigeration, Bavarian brewers could not brew through the hot summer months. So they brewed strong in March, stored the beer cold in caves through the summer, and drank what was left in autumn. That beer became Marzen, and Paulaner has been making its version for more than 200 years.
This is the amber counterpart to Paulaner's golden Oktoberfest Bier. Where that one is bright and crisp, the Marzen is rounder and richer, with a dark toffee note running underneath the malt. It is the flavor most Americans picture when they hear the word Oktoberfest.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Toasted bread, caramel malt, and a faint dried fruit sweetness
- Palate: Full bodied and malt forward, with dark toffee and a masterful hop balance holding it upright
- Finish: Clean and satisfying, slightly dry, with the malt lingering
How to Enjoy
- Serve at 45 to 50 degrees, a touch warmer than a pilsner, so the malt opens up
- Pair with roast pork, sausage, aged cheddar, soft pretzels, or grilled meats

The Story
Paulaner traces back to 1634, when Munich monks brewed strong beer in the Neudeck ob der Au monastery. The brewery secured its Oktoberfest license in 1818 and has poured on the Wiesn ever since, today serving three of the festival's biggest tents. Only six Munich breweries may legally brew Oktoberfest beer, and Paulaner is one of them. Brewed under the 1516 Reinheitsgebot purity law.
