March Beer, Poured in October
Before refrigeration, Bavarian brewers could not brew through summer. They brewed strong in March, stored it cold in caves, and drank the remainder in autumn. That beer became Marzen, and Paulaner has made its version for over two centuries.
On draft the Marzen shows its depth better than in bottle. It is the amber counterpart to the golden Oktoberfest Bier, rounder and richer, with a dark toffee note beneath the malt. This is the flavor most people picture when they hear Oktoberfest.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Toasted bread, caramel malt, a faint dried fruit sweetness
- Palate: Full bodied and malt forward, dark toffee held upright by balanced hops
- Finish: Clean and slightly dry, malt lingering
How to Enjoy
- Store cold and let the keg settle several hours after transport before tapping
- Pour at 45 to 50 degrees, a touch warmer than a pilsner, so the malt opens up
- Confirm you have the correct European coupler before pickup

The Story
Paulaner traces to 1634, when Munich monks brewed strong beer at the Neudeck ob der Au monastery. The brewery secured its Oktoberfest license in 1818 and now serves three of the festival's largest tents. Only six Munich breweries may legally brew Oktoberfest beer. Brewed under the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
