Lost Monarch Cask Strength: 117.2 Proof, Named For a Tree Nobody Will Show You

Lost Monarch is Redwood Empire's blend of straight bourbon and straight rye, and this is the cask strength version: uncut, unfiltered, 117.2 proof (58.6% ABV), blended and bottled in Sonoma County, California.

The standard Lost Monarch is proofed down. This one is not, and the difference is the point. Higher proof, heavier texture, and the rye spice comes forward hard instead of sitting politely behind the corn.

The Tree Is Real, and Its Location Is a Secret

The Lost Monarch is a coast redwood in the Grove of Titans, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. It stands about 320 feet, measures roughly 26 feet across, and holds an estimated 34,914 cubic feet of wood, making it the fifth largest coast redwood on Earth by volume.

It was not found until 11 May 1998, by botanist Stephen Sillett and naturalist Michael Taylor. A 320 foot tree hid from science until the late nineties. Its exact location has never been released, deliberately, because the concern is that foot traffic would damage the root system or invite vandalism. One survey estimated the tree was carrying around a thousand pounds of ferns in its canopy.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Vibrant and earthy. Mint chocolate, citrus and a lift of baking spice.
  • Palate: Warm spice and dried apricot over caramel, with walnut skin tannin giving it real grip.
  • Finish: Long and spice driven, closing on white and black pepper.

How to Enjoy

  • Neat, small pour: at 117.2 proof it is meant to be drunk the way it left the barrel.
  • Water, a few drops at a time: the apricot and chocolate open up. Add slowly, you cannot take it back.
