Ron Barcelo was founded in 1930 by Julian Barceló, a Spanish immigrant from Mallorca who built one of the Dominican Republic's big three rum producers alongside Bermudez and Brugal. Gran Anejo is the house's flagship aged expression, a blend of Dominican rums matured up to six years in American oak barrels previously used for bourbon, which is where the deep amber color and much of the caramel character comes from.
Made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, the rum leans toward a rounder, more balanced profile than heavier, funkier styles from other islands. It sits easily on its own or on the rocks, and it has the depth to carry a well built cocktail without disappearing into it.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Malt chocolate, vanilla, and caramelized walnuts.
- Palate: Smooth and semi-dry, with buttery caramel, toasted nuts, and a touch of cinnamon and clove.
- Finish: Long, with lingering oak and caramel.
