San Matias Gran Reserva: The House That Invented Extra Añejo
San Matias Gran Reserva is 100% agave Extra Añejo from Casa San Matías, NOM 1103, in Acatic in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco. Bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).
Here is the part worth knowing: in 1993 Casa San Matías released the world's first Extra Añejo tequila. They did not join the category, they created it. Casa San Matías has been distilling for more than 130 years, which makes it one of the oldest houses in Jalisco.
Three Plus Years in French Oak
Extra Añejo requires a minimum of three years. This spends over three years, at least 36 months, in French oak. French oak is tighter grained than the American oak most tequila rests in, so it contributes structure and spice rather than heavy vanilla, and it lets the highland agave stay visible through the wood.
The agave is 100% highland Blue Weber from Los Altos, which is the brighter, fruitier side of Jalisco.
Why This Bottle Is Unusual
Extra Añejo normally starts around eighty to a hundred dollars, because three years in wood is three years of evaporation and capital tied up. This one sits around fifty. It is comfortably the best value in the category and the right bottle to start with if you have never bought an Extra Añejo before.
It has taken a Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and been recognised at the World Tequila Awards.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Sweet dried tropical fruit with brown baking spice.
- Palate: Layered and rich. Maple and fudge with toasted nuts over cooked agave.
- Finish: Long and soft, spice and oak holding, no heat at 40%.
How to Enjoy
- Neat, in a snifter: three years of French oak deserves a glass that collects the aroma.
- After dinner: the maple and fudge make it a natural dessert pour.
- Do not mix it: an Extra Añejo in a cocktail wastes the wood you paid for.
- Side by side: pour it against a five year Extra Añejo to taste what the extra two years actually buys.
