Sazerac Rye Barrel #026: We Picked This One Ourselves
This is not the Sazerac Rye you find on a shelf. Barrel #026 was tasted and hand selected by The Booze Outlet out of the Sazerac Barrel Select program, and every bottle carries our seal and that barrel number. When this barrel is gone, it does not come back, and no other retailer in the country has it.
Sazerac Rye is distilled, aged and bottled for Sazerac Co. of New Orleans by the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Six years in new charred American oak at 90 proof (45% ABV), on a mashbill running 51% rye, roughly double what most American ryes use. It is the whiskey the original Sazerac cocktail was built on, and it is the reason that drink tastes the way it does.
Why a single barrel matters here. The standard bottling blends many barrels to hit a consistent house profile, which is the right call for a national brand. A single barrel does the opposite. You get whatever that one barrel became in its particular spot in the rickhouse, unblended and unaveraged. Barrel #026 was chosen because it stood out, not because it matched a target.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Cinnamon and allspice over clove, with vanilla and caramel underneath.
- Palate: Rye spice forward, as a 51% rye should be, with the oak sweetness holding the spine.
- Finish: Warm and dry with the baking spice lingering longer than the sweetness.
How to Enjoy
- A Sazerac, obviously: this whiskey, Peychaud's, sugar, absinthe rinse. America's first cocktail, made with the rye it was named for.
- Neat: 90 proof is the sweet spot for reading a single barrel without water.
