Stroh was founded in Klagenfurt, Austria in 1832, and the 160 proof Original has been the backbone of Austrian alpine drinking and baking culture ever since. In Europe it is labeled Stroh 80, referring straight to the 80% ABV. In the US it is Stroh 160, referring to the proof. Same bottle, same rum, just two ways of describing the same very serious number.
This is not a sipping rum, and it was never meant to be one. Distilled from molasses and infused with Stroh's spice blend, it is built to be diluted into hot drinks, stirred into batter, or lit tableside. A splash in Jagertee, mulled wine, or Feuerzangenbowle carries real rum flavor through the dilution in a way a standard 80 proof rum cannot. It also does serious work in holiday baking, from fruitcake to flans to rum balls, and a few drops in hot chocolate or coffee turns it into an instant apres ski drink.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Intensely aromatic, with heavy vanilla, molasses, butterscotch, and warm baking spice.
- Palate: Concentrated sweetness up front, giving way fast to cinnamon, nutmeg, and a peppery overproof heat.
- Finish: Long, powerful, and warming, with lingering butterscotch and dried fruit.
