Tears of Llorona No. 3: The Extra Anejo That Broke the Category's Rules

Tears of Llorona is the third creation of Germán González, a master tequilero and fifth generation descendant of Manuel González, a precursor of Mexican tequila going back to 1880. González learned the trade helping his father select, roast, distill and blend blue agave into what a lot of critics still consider the finest tequilas ever made. Bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) in a full one liter bottle.

What makes it unusual. This extra anejo spends roughly five years across three different cask types: ex Scotch whisky, Sherry, and Cognac or brandy barrels, blended to González's preference rather than in equal parts. Almost nobody in tequila does this, and the reason most producers avoid it is that five years in used European casks will bury a weak agave spirit completely. It does not bury this one.

González keeps his methods proprietary but has disclosed this much: his blue agave grows at higher altitude, is left to ripen longer, and is roasted at a lower temperature, which is where the smoother and more complex character comes from. The agave is double distilled in copper pot stills and fermented in stainless without fibers, on deep well water.

The name. La Llorona is the weeping woman of Mexican legend. The tears are the angels' share, the volume lost to evaporation across five years in wood, and on a tequila aged this long that loss is substantial. You are paying for what did not evaporate.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Cooked agave still legible under dried fruit, sherry sweetness and a curl of Scotch cask smoke.
• Palate: Deep and layered. Dried fig, raisin and toffee from the sherry, cocoa and oak from the cognac casks, with a faint peaty edge from the Scotch barrels.
• Finish: Very long and dry, closing on roasted agave, wood spice and a lingering smoke.

How to Enjoy

• Neat, room temperature, and slowly: this is a sipping tequila in the way a good cognac is a sipping brandy.
• In a copita or a Glencairn: the three cask influences separate out as it opens.
• Never in a cocktail: at this price and this age, mixing it is throwing money away.
• Beside a whisky drinker: the Scotch and sherry casks make this the tequila that converts them.
