DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
This is the 2024 Thomas H. Handy Sazerac, one of the five bottles in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Six years and three months old, uncut, unfiltered, and bottled straight from the barrel at 127.2 proof. Every year Handy comes out at a different strength because Buffalo Trace does not water it down to hit a number, and 127.2 is what these barrels gave them.
What is in the bottle
Handy is the rye in the Antique Collection, and it is the one that drinkers actually open. Cinnamon and Fireball candy on the nose with real heat behind it. The palate is cinnamon syrup, summer fruit, hard rye spice and peppery oak. It finishes dry, warm, on charred oak and leather. At 127.2 proof it will take a few drops of water, and it holds up to it.
It is named for Thomas H. Handy, the New Orleans barman who bought the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street in 1869 and swapped the brandy in the Sazerac cocktail for rye whiskey. That swap is why the drink is made with rye today. If you are going to build a Sazerac around a barrel proof rye, this is the one it was named after.
Why this is here and not somewhere else
The Antique Collection is allocated. Nobody gets to order it, you get what the distributor gives you. We got ten bottles of the 2024 Handy and we are not sitting on them at a collector markup. The specialty whiskey shops are asking $499 to $549 for this exact bottle right now. We are under all of them.
Ten bottles. When they are gone the listing comes down, because there is no reordering an allocated release.
