Thomas H. Handy Sazerac is the rye member of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, and it earns that seat every single year. It is bottled straight from the barrel: uncut, unfiltered, and released at full barrel strength. This bottling lands at 63.6% alcohol by volume, 127.2 proof, which puts every bit of the barrel's character in the glass with nothing stripped away.

The name traces back to Thomas H. Handy, the New Orleans barman who took over the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street and, in 1873, swapped the French brandy in the Sazerac cocktail for American rye whiskey. That single change made the drink what it is today. This whiskey is the modern tribute to that decision: bold, peppery, and unapologetically rye, made at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Baking spice, black pepper, candied citrus peel, and toasted oak, with a warm alcohol lift that signals the barrel proof.
  • Palate: Big rye spice up front, then dark caramel, clove, dried cherry, and leather. Full and oily in texture, intense without turning harsh.
  • Finish: Long, dry, and warming, with cinnamon, tobacco leaf, and lingering oak tannin.
