Few bottles carry the reputation of W.L. Weller 12 Year Old. Aged a full twelve years at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, it uses the same wheated mashbill as Pappy Van Winkle, and for many drinkers it is the closest legally purchasable stand in. Bottled at 90 proof, the extra years in oak give it a deep amber color and a layered, unhurried character.
Born in 1825, William Larue Weller was one of the earliest whiskey pioneers in America. He marketed his original bourbon recipe with wheat rather than rye, then spent his life educating drinkers on why that soft grain matters: a milder, gentler, smoother sipping experience. This twelve year old expression is the tribute bottle to the man who made wheated bourbon legendary.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Deep vanilla, baked apple and honey, with toasted oak and a dusting of cinnamon.
- Palate: Silky and rounded. Caramel, dark cherry and vanilla custard over oak and baking spice, with no rye bite anywhere.
- Finish: Long, soft and warming, closing on oak, cinnamon and lingering sweetness.
