Buffalo Trace put the specifications to bourbon drinkers directly — mash bill, warehouse, rickhouse floor, age and proof — and then went and made the bottle the fans voted for. The answer came back wheated and bottled at 95 proof, and the result is one of the most sought-after expressions in the W.L. Weller family.
The Weller mash bill replaces rye with wheat, which is the same recipe that made Pappy Van Winkle the most hunted whiskey in America. It gives you a softer, rounder, sweeter bourbon with none of the peppery bite — but at 95 proof C.Y.P.B. is not a soft pour. It carries real weight and structure, and it drinks like a bottle that was designed by people who knew exactly what they wanted. Released in tiny quantities, it disappears the moment it lands.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Soft caramel and vanilla over warm baked bread, with honey and a whisper of toasted oak
- Palate: Rich and rounded — brown sugar, butterscotch and stone fruit riding on the signature wheated softness, with cinnamon and dry oak arriving late
- Finish: Long and warming with lingering vanilla, gentle spice and a clean oak backbone. No harsh edges anywhere.
How to Enjoy
- Neat: The only way to properly judge a bottle like this. Pour 1.5 oz into a Glencairn and give it ten minutes to open up.
- One Large Cube: A single big ice cube softens the oak and pushes the caramel and honey forward. Excellent on a warm evening.
- Old Fashioned: If you're going to put an allocated wheated bourbon in a cocktail, this is the one — 95 proof stands up to sugar and bitters, and the wheat keeps it silky.
