Nearly a Thousand Years of Practice
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan has been brewing on the same hill in Freising since 1040. That is not marketing language, it is the documented founding date, and it makes Weihenstephan the oldest working brewery in the world. Today it also functions as the teaching brewery for the Technical University of Munich.
Festbier is the golden style of festival lager rather than the amber Marzen. It is brewed a little stronger than an everyday helles but stays bright, soft, and balanced, which is exactly the point. A festival beer has to be drinkable by the liter or it fails at its job.
Tasting Notes

The Story
Benedictine monks were brewing at Weihenstephan by 1040, when the abbey secured its license from the city of Freising. The brewery survived fires, plagues, and secularization, and is now owned by the state of Bavaria. It sits alongside the university's brewing faculty, where much of the world's professional brewing science is taught. Brewed to the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
