Wemyss Malts The Hive: A Speyside Led Blended Malt, Named For Its Honey
The Hive is a handcrafted blended malt Scotch whisky from the Wemyss family, pronounced Weems. It is a small batch blend of single malts with a Speyside core, non chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV, and the house names it for the honeyed character that runs through the whole thing.
Non chill filtered at 46% is the detail worth knowing. Most blends at this price are filtered cold and bottled at 40%, which strips out the oils that carry texture and weight. The Hive keeps them, so it drinks fuller than the shelf price suggests.
The Wemyss name means caves in Scots, a nod to the rocky shore in Fife where Wemyss Castle has looked out to sea for more than 800 years. The family has been in and around whisky for generations, and every bottling carries the Wemyss signature as a guarantee of authenticity.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Florals and sticky blossom honey with beeswax, orchard fruit and a little toasted cereal.
- Palate: Rich and rounded. Honeycomb and baked apple with zesty orange peel and a ginger tingle.
- Finish: Warm and zesty, closing on clove spiked grapefruit, honey and a dusting of oak.
How to Enjoy
- Neat: non chill filtered at 46% means real texture, so skip the ice at first.
- With a drop of water: lifts the honey and fruit even higher.
- After dinner: a natural dessert whisky without being cloying.
