The Boss Hog X: The Commandments, and the Frankincense Barrel Nobody Had Tried

The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual flagship, hand bottled on the WhistlePig Farm in Shoreham, Vermont, and Boss Hog X completes the first decalogue of the series. Straight rye whiskey, single barrel, bottled at barrel proof with the proof written on by hand. The bottle we have is Barrel 113 at 106.2 proof (53.1% ABV), bottled in Shoreham in 2024.

What WhistlePig actually did here. Three stages. It starts in new American oak. Then it goes into barrels seasoned with an experimental spirit infused with frankincense and myrrh resins, the genera Boswellia and Commiphora, printed right on the label. Then a second finish in craft mead casks. Head Blender Meghan Ireland got there by developing a whey and rye spirit capable of carrying the resins into the wood, and WhistlePig calls it a world first: nobody had used tree resins as a maturation vector in whiskey before this bottle.

The theme is not decoration. Frankincense and myrrh are the resins of the Commandments story, and the tenth Boss Hog replaced the brand's original five promises with ten. Whether or not you care about the mythology, the liquid is doing something genuinely new, and that is rarer in whiskey than any age statement.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Honey and citrus over warm spice and a resinous, almost incense-like top note that is unlike anything else in rye.
• Palate: Creme brulee and nutty richness with lemongrass and rosemary from the resin barrels, then the mead casks arriving as honeyed sweetness underneath.
• Finish: Long and layered, closing on honey, dry spice and lingering aromatic resin.

How to Enjoy

• Neat, and give it time: the resin aromatics need ten minutes in the glass to separate from the alcohol.
• Nothing added: at 106.2 proof this is bottled exactly as the barrel gave it. Water flattens the incense note.
• Share it: this is a bottle to open in front of people who will understand what they are tasting.
